Where on my body should I apply insect repellent?
Insect repellents should be applied to all exposed parts of your body, paying particular attention to arms, legs and ankles. These areas are particularly prone to mosquito and insect bites.

If applying insect repellents to your face, place some of the insect repellent in the palm of your hand and apply to the bridge of the nose, cheeks and jaw line only.

How often should I reapply?
This varies from product to product. A as rule of thumb if travelling to a tropical destination you should use a product containing a minimum 50% DEET and this should provide sufficient insect bite avoidance for up to 12 hours. Non-DEET alternatives like Saltidin can can also last up to 12 hours. Unfortunately this is in laboratory conditions and in reality more frequent applications will be required particularly if the conditions are hot and humid or you are going swimming.

How much should I buy?
As a rule of thumb, one 100ml bottle will last two adults who apply only in the evening on a two week holiday.

Do insect repellents smell bad?
Some do, and the rest are passable. Lets face it none of them are going to smell great. Insect repellents made by Lifesystems tend to smell the best in our opinion. Generally DEET based insect sprays tend to smell the worst with non-DEET alternatives containing Saltidin, like Trek Sensitive and Lifesystems Natural Plus smelling better.

If asthmatic or prone to breathing problems do not buy an aerosol type spray, buy lotions, creams and pump sprays instead.
